Septic Tanks

The installation and operation of subsurface sewage disposal systems (septic systems) are regulated by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), with county health departments administering and enforcing the program at the local level. Proposed subdivisions that will be served by subsurface sewage disposal systems must receive approval from TDEC before the subdivision may be approved by the local planning commission or any other agency authorized to approve subdivisions.
