Underground Storage Tanks

Reference Number: MTAS-605
Reviewed Date: 07/01/2026

Cities that own or operate petroleum underground storage tanks (USTs) must comply with state and federal requirements governing the installation, operation, leak detection, corrosion protection, maintenance, closure, and replacement of tanks. The Underground Storage Tanks and Solid Waste Disposal Control Board establishes rules for the state program, which is administered by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC). The program establishes financial responsibility requirements for tank owners and operators and provides a reimbursement mechanism for eligible cleanup costs and certain third-party claims through the Petroleum Underground Storage Tank Fund. Owners and operators must comply with statutory and regulatory eligibility requirements, deadlines, and reporting obligations to qualify for reimbursement. T.C.A. § 68-215-101 et seq.

Eligible reimbursement amounts and deductibles are established by state law and Board rules and may change over time.
