Reviewed Date: 07/01/2026

Tennessee's Brownfield Redevelopment Program, established by T.C.A. § 68-212-224, provides a voluntary process for the investigation and remediation of contaminated properties under the oversight of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. The commissioner may enter into voluntary agreements or consent orders with willing participants, and participants who satisfy the terms of those agreements may receive liability protections for existing contamination, subject to applicable law.

T.C.A. § 68-212-226 also authorizes local governments to use tax increment financing (TIF) to help finance eligible brownfield redevelopment projects.
