One second at a time : how red-light distraction adds up / Garima Shrestha, Ryan Fries, and Yan Qi

A recent study at a suburban university intersection found that drivers using their phones at red lights took significantly longer to react when the signal turned green. Distracted driving begins whenever attention shifts away from the road, even if the vehicle is not moving. Using phones at red lights can slow traffic and increase variability and reduce system efficiency at intersections.
