Library Director

The Library Director performs professional and supervisory work in planning, implementing, and managing all aspects of a comprehensive program of service to library patrons.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of experience working in a public library, including some supervisory or administrative roles.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution or Certification from the Public Library Management Institute

Required Competencies:

  • Ability to navigate the basic operational and productivity software necessary to complete core work functions:
    • Word processing
    • Simple spreadsheets
    • Sending and receiving emails
    • Understanding basic computer terminology
    • Working knowledge of hardware and peripherals (monitors, printers, keyboards, touchscreens, etc.)
  • Familiarity with the use of the Internet in:
    • Navigating search engines and browsers
    • Library research
    • Library work such as interlibrary loans and cataloguing
    • Collection development
  • Familiarity with professional library journals and other tools for collection and staff development
  • Ability to communicate effectively with library staff, Board of Trustees and the community both in meetings and public speaking situations.
  • Ability to interpret community interests and needs and translate them into appropriate library services
  • Ability to investigate and submit successful applications for effective grants to improve library programs, services, and collections
  • Ability to plan, organize, evaluate and manage both the internal and outreach programs of the Martin Public Library Ability to plan and implement a budget to recommend to the Board of Trustees.
