WATER & WASTEWATER SUPERINTENDENT
Under the general direction of the Utilities Superintendent, manages, assigns, and reviews supervisors engaged in the collection, treatment, operation, and maintenance of water distribution, water production, meter shop, wastewater treatment, and wastewater collection facilities; and does related work as required.
Schedules work and assigns jobs.
Trains personnel concerning laboratory and operational techniques.
Requests materials and equipment.
Assists work crews with difficult jobs.
Provides advice or work methods and procedures.
Reviews operating records of each division.
Supervises large construction and maintenance projects.
Inspects work or progress and upon completion.
Assists with preparation of departmental word programs and policies, cost estimates, planning, and budget request.
Responsible for enforcing City and departmental rules and regulations.
Counsels and disciplines departmental personnel.
Prepares and administers approved budget.
Writes specifications for material used in water and wastewater systems.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
Locates supply sources for replacing vehicles, equipment, and machinery tools and answers telephones.
Reads, understands, and conveys written or verbal job instructions.
Writes reports by hand; uses good judgement to work safely and use equipment properly.
Sits, stands, stoops, or twists for extended periods of time while supervising or participating in water operations.
Works both indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures including heat, cold, temperature swings, and inclement weather; some exposure to dust, odor, electrical mechanical, and toxic hazards, using proper safety precautions communicates effectively and courteously with other city employees and the public.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in water and wastewater facilities construction, maintenance and operation.
Knowledge of supervisory techniques; experience in organizing, planning and supervising the work of others.
Knowledge and experience in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, plans, and specifications.
Knowledge and experience in long range planning; knowledge of record keeping and writing reports.
Experience in leading, directing, and communicating effectively with the public and subordinates.
Tennessee Class Water Plant/Water distribution/Wastewater Plant Operator/Wastewater distribution Operator license.
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to:
High School Diploma or GED with ten (10) years experience in mechanical and electrical applications.
Bachelor of science degree preferred.
Tennessee Commercial Drivers License.
Six years experience in water and wastewater treatment, construction operation, and maintenance including three years of supervisory experience.
Applicants must be in such physical condition as not to impair their performance of the required duties of the class and may be required to take a physical examination given by a physician licensed to practice medicine in the State and designated by the City.
