An ordinance of the the Town of Mountain City, Tennessee establishing compensation for the members of the board of mayor and aldermen.
AN ORDINANCE OF THE TOWN OF MOUNTAIN CITY, TENNESSEE ESTABLISHING COMPENSATION FOR THE MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF MAYOR AND ALDERMEN.
WHEREAS, members of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen essentially serve without compensation, and receive only $25 per month to offset expenses related to serving, and;
WHEREAS, there are significant expenses related to serving as a board member, including the costs of gas, some meals, phone expenses, loss of time at work or use of vacation days, etc., and;
WHEREAS, a nominal compensation will help to offset expenses so that members do not have as many concerns with the cost of being a public servant, and;
WHEREAS, the Mountain City Municipal Code in Article IV, Section 7, provides that the Board may establish compensation for the Mayor and members of the Board but that such compensation cannot take effect during an existing term of office, and;
WHEREAS, in order to provide equal compensation and in order to wait until all existing terms are completed, the effective date of this change must be after the second election from today, which will occur in March of 2009;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE TOWN OF MOUNTAIN CITY, TENNESSEE THAT:
Section 1. The compensation of the Mayor of Mountain City shall be set at $350 per month.
Section 2. The compensation of the members of the Board of Aldermen of Mountain City shall be set at $250 per month.
Section 3. The provisions of this ordinance shall take effect at the first meeting of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen of the Town of Mountain City in April of 2009.
Section 4. This ordinance shall take effect from and after its passage, the welfare of the Town requiring it.
