1. Why do you want to be a firefighter?
2. Give us an example of your past behavior that would clearly show qualities that would make us believe that you are willing to serve the citizens of our community as a member of the Fire Department.
3. At what point in your life did you decide to become a firefighter?
4. What have you done to prepare yourself to be a firefighter?
5. What are your short-term and long-term job goals?
6. What talents, skills, or abilities do you have that you can bring to the job?
7. What do you think the important attributes of a firefighter should be and what is the most important one?
8. In the past, when someone asked you a question that you did not know the answer to, what did you say?
9. If you were a firefighter here, and an officer in the fire department gave you a reasonable order that would put your life in some danger, what would you do?
10. Can you be part of a team and describe what teamwork means to you.
11. Are you aware that the job of a firefighter is very physically demanding? How do you plan to stay in good enough physical condition to continue in this job?
12. Were you a good student? Will you be able to apply yourself to learn the technical and academic materials that you will need to be a good firefighter?
13. Can you read a written operational guideline and apply what it says to your job?
14. If you are selected as a firefighter here, what will be your attitude towards drugs and alcohol?
15. Since a firefighter is required to have a valid driver’s license, do you think it is acceptable to discipline or discharge an employee for actions they take off the job?
16. Forget about vanity for a minute and describe yourself in the most positive way you can.
17. Describe your biggest weakness and how you deal with it.
18. How do you handle conflict between individuals that you work with on the job?
19. Would the sex, race or religion of another firefighter, if it were different from yours, affect your ability to work with them?
20. What do you see as being the biggest challenges, opportunities, or stumbling blocks if you get this job?
21. Why should we select you over the other candidates for this job?
