Job description for the position of Clerk.
CLERK
DEFINITION
This employee provides a variety of administrative support services in city hall. The employee in this class is under the immediate supervision of the Principal Clerk. Standing instructions are detailed and specific, generally covering all aspects of the employees work.
EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION
The employee will operate a variety of modern office equipment including a typewriter, calculator, cash register, copy machine and computer.
The employee typically works indoors in an office environment and may be exposed to tobacco smoke. The employee may be required to lift objects such as journals and reports.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
Assists with payroll and the keeping of vacation and sick leave records for employees.
Collects payments of water bills, city taxes, city fines and other payments to the city.
Balances receipts with cash register tape.
Serves as a receptionist, answering telephone calls and greeting visitors.
ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
Answers telephone calls, takes complaints, and routes calls to proper persons.
Receives service orders for the water department.
Assists with the posting and filing of tax receipts.
Sorts and distributes incoming mail.
Calculates penalties on delinquent taxes, researches tax and utility delinquencies.
Performs various clerical tasks.
Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment.
Ability to type accurately, keep records and perform routine clerical tasks.
Knowledge of business telephone manners and techniques.
Ability to converse plainly and directly in a courteous and friendly manner with a variety of individuals.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, city officials and other employees. Public contact is frequent.
Ability to follow oral or written instructions.
QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from an accredited high school.
At least 6 months experience in a modern office environment.
Must have an ability to be bonded.
