CUSTOMER RECORDS CLERK


DEFINITION

Under general supervision, interviews applicants and records interview information into computer for water system services; connects and disconnects consumer water services; performs other related field duties as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Interfaces with the public on a daily basis to connect and disconnect water service;
Fill out contract forms, determines charges for service requested, prepares change of address records and issues discontinuance orders, using computer;
Collects delinquent accounts;
Re-reads and checks water meters;
May adjust complaints concerning billing or service rendered, referring complaints of service failure to designated departments;
Responds to customer's questions regarding utility and tax;
Makes visit clients for on-site collection and/or disconnects;
Sits and stands for extended periods;
Responsible for the safe operation, care, and appearance of assigned vehicle and equipment;
Communicates effectively with the public and other City employees;
Stuffs utility statements into envelopes and mails; relieves other office associates as needed during peak periods;
Climbs ladder to lift and retrieve records weighing up to 30 pounds and. meter lids weighing up to 60 pounds;

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

Monitor two-way radio traffic; may be required to take service orders; sell state electrical inspection permits; take payments; and may work outdoors in extreme temperatures including heat, cold, temperature swings and inclement weather.
Sits and uses PC for extended periods of time.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of water meter reading operations and service policies;
Knowledge of electric and water distribution systems;
Knowledge of Fair Credit Reporting Act;
Ability to set and remove meters;
Ability to communicate effectively with others;
Ability to deal with customers in difficult situations and make decisions;
Ability to work with details;
Ability to operate a PC computer, adding machine, typewriter and other office equipment;
Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of training or experience equivalent to:

High school diploma or GED. TN Driver's license.
One years experience in meter reading and related service work.
