The employee is responsible for assisting the Chief in Police Department operations performed by planning, organizing, and directing the overall activities of the Department. Duties also include protecting property, facilities, and people through the enforcement of laws and ordinances under the general supervision of the Chief, City Administrator and Police Committee. Independent judgement is used according to the situation and different courses of action must be taken to complete the department tasks.
The employee will operate law enforcement equipment including, police cars, mobile radios, walkies, recorders, finger printing equipment, cameras, camcorders, VCR'S, radar equipment, typewriters, tear gas equipment, batons and lethal weapons, such as, pistols, shotguns and rifles.
Employee supervises police operations in the City and work must be performed in all kinds of weather conditions.
The employee is exposed to dangerous conditions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
Must be able to fire a weapon accurately.
Responsible for Police Department personnel in conjunction with the Police Chief.
Performs administrative activities of the Department.
Plans and directs the supervision of the Department through subordinates.
Coordinates on-the-job training programs for recruits and personal development.
Investigates or supervises others investigating suspected crimes, reporting findings, and arresting suspected individuals.
Keeps records and prepares reports, including accident and personnel reports.
Must react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to determine proper course of actions.
Ability to ascertain facts by personal contact, observation and the examination of records.
Ability to explain and interpret provisions of laws, ordinances and regulations to the employees and the public.
Deals effectively with Citizen complaints regarding police procedures.
Must be able to defend himself/herself and others with and without the use of deadly force.
Must be able to maintain an effective working relationship with the employees of the Department.
Cooperates with other departments of the City to unite the City as one.

Testifies in court or legal proceedings.
Supervises the maintenance and use of law enforcement equipment and facilities.
Inspects personnel and equipment.
Must establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.
Must exert themselves physically for short periods of time such as running and lifting.
Directs and controls traffic when necessary.
Must make arrests when necessary.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the court system and presentation of evidence in court proceedings.
Knowledge of the City ordinances and State laws.
Knowledge of modern police practices and methods used in crime investigation and the identification and presentation of physical evidence.
Knowledge of geographic area of the City.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of police supervision.
Knowledge of the City's provisions for emergency situations.
Ability to enforce laws firmly, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others.
Ability to operate all law enforcement equipment required in the performance of required duties.
Knowledge of all legal regulations regarding employee health & safety.
Knowledge of the use of police records and their applications to the solution of police problems.
Knowledge of personnel regulations and procedures.
Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
Must be a citizen of the U. S.
Must not have been convicted of a felony or a serious misdemeanor involving Moral Turpitude as the term is defined by law, and not to have been released or discharged under any other than Honorable conditions from any of the Armed Forces of the U.S.
Must pass a medical examination by licensed physician.
Must pass a drug screen by a licensed physician.
Must be free of all apparent mental disorders as described in the Diagnosis and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Third Edition (DSM-11) of the American Psychiatric Association and must be certified as meeting the criteria by a qualified professional in Psychiatric and Psychological fields.
Must have completed a POST approved Police Academy with a satisfactory score in all fields, including firearms qualifications, physical education, and defensive techniques. Must possess a valid Tennessee operator's license.
Must have experience in police administration and supervision.
Must have completed a basic supervisory course or complete a course within 6 (six) months (if offered by the City).
Must meet the City's "Weight Control Policy.”
Must pass physical - agility test.
