MTAS Research and Information Center

The Research and Information Center (RIC) serves as a clearinghouse for information produced by and about cities and provides research, reference and survey services. Surveys for MTAS consultants and city officials are conducted to create and collect unique information on municipal government not available from other sources. RIC staff are responsible for the quarterly MTAS E-News and posting to MTAS's Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn pages.

MTAS Tennessee Fire Department Needs Assessment Survey 2020

UT MTAS is repeating the 2014 comprehensive survey regarding the needs of the Tennessee fire service.  While there are other national level fire service needs assessments, the MTAS 2014 survey was the first comprehensive needs assessment focused exclusively on the needs of the Tennessee fire service. As it did in 2014, the 2020 survey is gathering information on all aspects of fire service operations including budget, personnel, community service, training and certifications, communications, technology, as well as the self-identified top priority needs of departments across the state.
The results of the 2014 survey showed that the Tennessee fire service had extensive needs in many areas, especially in our smaller communities. By updating the survey data, MTAS will be able to see if progress has been made in addressing the needs identified in 2014, as well as identifying any new gaps. This information is critical as it will be used to justify requests for resources and funds to improve the level of fire protection in Tennessee.

This statewide survey is underway as of October 30, 2020. The survey closes on December 4, 2020.
