Re: Vacancies in Office
Dear Ms. Cotton
You have asked MTAS what election procedures should be followed should the mayor resign prior to the upcoming November election? The City of Caryville operates under the Mayor-Aldermanic Charter.
Should the mayor resign prior to the election, the vice-mayor automatically assumes the office of mayor. The effect of his becoming mayor vacates his former office as alderman. Under these circumstances Caryville would need to hold an election for both the office of alderman and mayor in November. Under your charter, the board could appoint an alderman to serve until the November election.
Please call me if you need further assistance or have questions.
