REFUSE COLLECTOR


DEFINITION

This employee performs manual collection and disposal of refuse. The employee is under the immediate supervision of the Superintendent of Streets, Sanitation and Parks. Instructions to the employee are detailed and specific.

EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION

The employee will use a variety of hand tools such as a shovel, rake, scoop and other small tools.
The employee may occasionally be required to drive a dump truck.
Work is characterized by the necessity for considerable physical exertion, by close daily contact with unpleasant materials and for working out of doors under occasionally adverse weather conditions.
Work involves heavy lifting and exposure to fumes, chemicals and other noxious odors, machinery with moving parts, and noise.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

Performs routine and repetitive work as part of a crew in collecting garbage, refuse and other waste materials.
As ground man on a refuse collection crew: walks to the garbage disposal areas of residential and commercial premises, empties garbage cans into truck, picks up any spilled materials.
Works with the driver to ensure adequate attachment of dumpsters and picks up spilled materials.

ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Uses pitch forks, shovels and similar hand tools to pick up general refuse and trash from curbstone and other areas.
May drive a dump truck when necessary.
Assist with general maintenance of sanitation vehicles, including greasing of vehicle, changing oil and tires, etc.
Performs other duties as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of the use of common hand tools.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Must have an ability to work with unpleasant waste.
Must have sufficient physical strength and agility to lift, move, and carry heavy objects and to work under variable weather conditions.
Ability to carry out instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

Some experience in heavy manual labor.
Prefer completion of the tenth (l0th) grade.
