Knowledgebase-Heavy Equipment Operator
This employee operates a variety of heavy equipment such as a bulldozer, backhoe, sanitation truck, tractor, etc. The employee also engages in general labor activities. This employee is under the immediate supervision of the Superintendent of Streets, Sanitation and Parks or the Superintendent of Water and Sewer, and receives detailed and specific instructions for work to be performed.
The employee will operate a variety of heavy and light equipment such as a bulldozer, backhoe, sanitation truck, tractor, and other equipment.
The employee will also use a variety of hand tools and small machinery such as a weed eater, chain saw, hand mower, etc.
The employee will be required to lift, carry, dig, climb, bend and move moderate to very heavy objects.
The employee will be exposed to all types of weather with possible exposure to fumes, chemicals, toxic substances, and machinery with moving parts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
Operates a bulldozer, and other heavy or light equipment, to move dirt, solid waste, and other material.
Installs water and/or sewer lines.
Performs general labor duties such as litter and garbage pick up, digging, mowing, street and parks maintenance, painting, cleaning, reading of meters, etc.
Drives a sanitation vehicle as necessary.
ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
Maintains and performs repair work on equipment.
Removes debris from street rights-of-ways, catch basins, drainage ways and other City property.
Loads and unloads dirt, gravel, trash, refuse and other debris.
Works as part of construction crew in road repair, gravel spreading or ditch digging.
May repair meters, leaks in water or sewer lines, install taps and fire hydrants, and repair or maintain water and sewer system components; may serve as water or sewer operator.
Cleans equipment and tools.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of practices used in the safe operation of heavy and light equipment.
HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
Knowledge of State and city traffic regulations.
Knowledge of the materials and types of equipment used in general city maintenance work and/or the water and sewer system.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Ability to operate a variety of heavy and light equipment.
Ability to understand and follow instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees and the general public.
Experience in heavy equipment operation.
May be required to have a valid State of Tennessee Water or Wastewater
Distribution Class I license.
Must possess a valid Tennessee driver’s license.
