EQUIPMENT OPERATOR



DEFINITION:
The employee is responsible for operating a variety of construction machinery in either a specific or a variety of maintenance construction and/or utility tasks. Other duties include inspecting and checking the preventive maintenance and safety of the equipment. Duties also include general utility and construction maintenance under the direct supervision of the assigned Department Head or his/her designee.
Instructions to the employee are specific; however, independent judgement is sometimes used to complete a task.


EQUIPMENT JOB LOCATION:

The employee will operate articulating loader, road grader, backhoe, asphalt machine and other construction equipment, such as saws, rakes, shovels, etc.
Work is generally performed outdoors and some tasks will be performed regardless of weather.
The employee will be exposed to loud noise, dirt, dust, tobacco smoke, and foul odors.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

Operates backhoe, grader, and/or small dozer in routine maintenance tasks.
Pushes lever and pedals in the proper operation of machinery.
Connects hydraulic hose, belts, or other mechanical linkage to machine to provide power.
Inspects the equipment for mechanical problems and informs supervisor of any problems.
Loads and/or helps load and unload trucks that requires lifting 25 to 50 lbs.
Maintains and cleans related hand tools and equipment.
May work individually on a specific task or may work on a variety of tasks involving operating machinery.
Removes debris from street rights-of-way and other City property.
Works as part of a construction crew in road repair.
Must intermittently sit and stand as a result of continuously getting on and off of equipment.
Performs additional duties or emergency duties after normal work hours when requested by supervisor or designee.

ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
(Any one position may not include all of the listed duties or duties which may be performed.)

Cuts grass with hand tools or power equipment.
Loads and unloads, dirt, gravel, trash, garbage other debris.
May operate other moving machinery.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of practices used in the operation of assigned vehicle.
Knowledge of State and City traffic regulations.
Knowledge of safety precautions.
Knowledge of the routine care and use of construction equipment.
Knowledge of the use of related materials, tools, and equipment used in general maintenance and construction work.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Ability to operate assigned equipment.
Ability to carry out simple written and oral instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees.
Ability to work with machines and sharp tools.
Ability to bend, crouch, or stoop.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience in the operation of construction machinery.
Pass a Drug Screen by licensed physician.
