A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE
MUNICIPAL TECHNICAL ADVISORY SERVICE (MTAS)
TO FACILITATE A STRATEGIC PLANNING SESSION FOR THE
CITY OF __________, AND TO REQUIRE ITS PRESENTATION IN A
REPORT FOR THE CITY COUNCIL OF _______, TENNESSEE.

WHEREAS, the city of ________ is interested in identifying ways in which it can best achieve its potential; and

WHEREAS, MTAS, an agency of the University of Tennessee’s Institute of Public Service provides technical assistance to 347 cities and towns across the state to municipal governing bodies, mayors, city managers, city recorders and clerks, and city department heads; and

WHEREAS, a formal strategic planning session helps a city to identify its mission, vision, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats; and

WHEREAS, a successful strategic planning session will result in a list of agreed upon goals and objectives that will guide the city for the upcoming two to five years; and

WHEREAS, a strategic planning session requires the full support of the governing body, including the dedication of significant time to in drafting the plan, and then in insuring implementation; and

WHEREAS, MTAS will work closely with staff to assist in implementing stated goals and objectives; and

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF _____________, that the City Council recognizes the significant investment of time and effort by its members and MTAS and therefore resolves:

1. to make a good-faith effort to attend and actively participate in the process; and

2. to refer frequently to the goals and objectives, making a true effort to implement and achieve them; and

3. to try to consciously make decisions and pass policies that are compatible with the city’s mission and vision statements; and
