ENTRY LEVEL

Probationary Firefighter (FD1) (Class Comp Level __)
This is the entry-level position in the Fire Department. Once an applicant has been hired, they begin a one-year probationary period. During this period, the PF (probationary firefighter) shall complete a twelve-week training program as outlined by the department. They shall then be assigned to a fire station for additional on-the-job training. Prior to the end of this year of probation, the PF shall challenge and pass the Firefighter One exam as given by the Tennessee Commission on Firefighter Training and Standards. The Chief of the Fire Department may, at his discretion, extent the PF's probationary period by up to six months, if, in the opinion of the Chief the PF may be able to pass the Firefighter One exam. However, if after this extension, the PF cannot pass the exam, they shall be discharged from the department.
FUNCTIONAL LEVEL

Firefighter One (FD2) (Class Comp Level __)
This is the second level of the Fire Department. A firefighter at this level has the minimal functional skills to perform most operations or procedures within the fire department. Within one year of attainment of this rank, the Firefighter One (F1) shall challenge and successfully pass the Firefighter Two exam as given by the Tennessee Commission on Firefighter Training and Standards. The Chief of the Fire Department may, at his discretion, extent the F1's tenure period by up to one year, if, in the opinion of the Chief the F1 may be able to pass the Firefighter Two exam. However, if after this extension, the F1 cannot pass the Firefighter Two exam, they shall be discharged from the department.
OPERATIONS LEVEL

Firefighter Two (FD3) (Class Comp Level __)
This is the third level of the Fire Department. At this level the Firefighter Two (F2) will be able to perform all functions of their job at a very proficient level. It will be at this level of the department that the largest number of personnel is expected to be found. Before the Firefighter Two can be promoted to the next level, they shall have successfully passed the Fire Apparatus Operator exam as given by the Tennessee Firefighter Commission.

Master Firefighter (FD4) (Class Comp Level __)
This is the level of operation within the Fire Department where the employee is expected to be able to drive and operate Pumpers, Aerial Apparatus, and other vehicle owned by the department. Firefighters at this level shall be able to continue to meet the requirements of all previous level, and in addition be able to drive and operate all fire apparatus at their assigned fire station. Before the Firefighter Three can be promoted to Master Firefighter, they shall have successfully passed the Fire Instructor 1 and Fire Officer 1 exams as given by the Tennessee Firefighter Commission. This person is a team leader of the personnel assigned to the fire station on a permanent or temporary basis during their shift. They are responsible to the shift Commander and shall lead the assigned team in emergency operations. The station officer is responsible for the coordination of day-to-day activities at their station.


SHIFT COMMANDER

Captain (FD5) (Class Comp Level __)
This person has overall operational responsibility for the entire city on the shift to which they are assigned. This person is the field commander at most fire and emergency incidents. The Commander is the shift supervisor and has administrative and operational responsibility for all regular personnel on their shift. The Shift Commanders (Captains) answer directly to the Fire Chief.


MANAGEMENT LEVEL

Chief (FD6) (Class Comp Level __)
The Chief of the Fire Department shall be responsible to the Mayor and Board of Alderman for the direction and management of the department.
