Text of Document: Purpose of Job

The purpose of this job is to perform functions involving all aspects of municipal planning including zoning, current and long-range planning, and special projects. Duties and responsibilities include assisting in interpretation, enforcement and updating of zoning ordinances; providing information to public; conducting site inspections; performing research functions; reviewing documentation for compliance with ordinances; and period related clerical functions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Conducts site inspections for conformance with City codes.

Reviews drawings, site plans, applications, and related documentation for compliance with ordinances.

Administers the sign ordinance, to include meeting with applicants, reviewing proposals, issuing permits, processing fees, inventorying/removing illegal signs and making proposals on ordinance amendments.

Assists with interpreting regulations (e.g., zoning ordinances, subdivision regulations, municipal codes, state statutes, federal acts).

Assists with code enforcement activities, to include preparing letters, initiating phone calls, or performing field research.

Coordinates the dissementation of information on street addresses to public utilities, city staff, and the public at large.

Provides technical/drafting/design assistance as requested.
Assists in implementation/operation of the City's Geographic Information System and other equipment.
Uses knowledge of various software programs to operate a computer in an effective and efficient manner.
Performs various research duties; tracks development and demographic information, completes statistical trend studies; prepares projections.

Interprets flood maps and makes formal flood zone determinations.
Maintains inventory of departmental documents/maps for public sale.
Issues permits for limited duration events and tents, reviews sites, holds and returns bonds.
Assists in preparing preliminary documentation to update regulations.

Prepares and/or generates correspondence, letters, memoranda, forms, reports, charts/graphs and other documents.

Receives, opens and distributes incoming mail; prepares outgoing mail.

Copies and distributes correspondence, memoranda, reports and other related materials.

Answers the telephone; provides information; takes and relays messages and/or directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary; initiates problem resolution.

Responds to routine requests for information from officials, employees, members of the staff, the public or other individuals.

Greets visitors, ascertains nature of business, assists and/or directs visitors to appropriate person.

Receives monetary payment of filing fees; issues receipts; forwards as appropriate.

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

Bachelor's Degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, Business Administration or related field required, with one to two years of experience involving municipal land use planning (or related); or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job. May require a valid Driver's License.
