DEFINITION:

The employee is responsible for conducting investigations of criminal cases and accidents. Duties also include protecting property, facilities and people through the enforcement of laws and ordinances under the general supervision of the chief and assistant chief. The detective is to cooperate with each shift captain on criminal investigations involving their shift. Independent judgement is used according to the situation and different courses of action must be taken to complete a task.

EQUIPMENT JOB LOCATION

The employee will operate law enforcement equipment including police cars, mobile radios, walkies, recorders, finger printing equipment, cameras, camcorder, VCR'S, radar equipment, typewriters, tear gas equipment, batons, and lethal weapons such as pistols, shotguns and rifles.
Employees patrol the City and work must be performed in all kinds of weather conditions. The employee is exposed to dangerous conditions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

Must be able to fire a weapon accurately.
Investigates or supervises others investigating suspected crimes, reports findings and arrests suspected individuals.
Compiles evidence and testifies in court.
Makes decisions according to state and local laws and regulations.
Interviews witnesses.
Questions crime suspects.
Keeps records and prepares reports.
Must react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and determine proper course of action.
Ability to ascertain facts by personal contact, observation and the examination of records.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.
Must deal effectively with citizen problems regarding criminal cases.
Must exert themselves physically for short periods of time, such as running and lifting.
Must be able to defend himself/herself and others without the use of deadly force.
Must make arrests and file the proper paper work.
Files the proper paper work for search warrants.

Exercises discretion and uses imagination within the guidelines of the law.
Directs and controls traffic when necessary.
Trains other officers in investigative procedures.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the court system and presentation of evidence in court proceedings.
Knowledge of the City ordinances and State Laws.
Knowledge of modern police practices and methods used in crime investigation and the identification and presentation of physical evidence.
Knowledge of geographic area of the City.
Knowledge of the principles and practices supervision.
Knowledge of the City's provisions for emergency situations.
Ability to explain and interpret provisions of laws, ordinances, and regulations.
Ability to enforce laws firmly, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others
Ability to plan and direct investigations.
Ability to operate all law enforcement equipment required in the performance of required duties.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be a citizen of the U.S.
Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
Must not have been convicted of a felony or a serious misdemeanor involving Moral Turpitude as the term is defined by law, and not to have been released or discharged under any other than Honorable conditions from any of the Armed Forces of the U.S.
Must have his or her fingerprints on file with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
Must pass a medical examination by a licensed physician.
Must pass a drug screen by a licensed physician.
Must be free of all apparent mental disorders as described in the Diagnosis and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Third Edition (DSM-11) of the American Psychiatric Association and must be certified as meeting the criteria by a qualified professional in Psychiatric and Psychological fields.
Must have completed a POST approved Police Academy with a satisfactory score in all fields, including firearms qualifications, physical education, and defensive techniques.
Must possess a valid Tennessee operator's license.
Must have experience in police work.
Must meet City's "Weight Control Policy.”
Must complete a Post Approval Criminal Investigation school
Must pass physical - agility test.
