Text of Document: UTILITY WORKER

The employee is responsible for performing maintenance tasks of an unskilled or semi-skilled nature: cutting grass, removing debris from streets, loading and unloading dirt, gravel, trash and other debris including manual collection and disposal of refuse. Duties also include other support services under the close supervision of the Department Head or his/her designee where they are assigned. Instructions to the employee are generally specific; however, there are times the employee must consider different courses of action to complete the task.


The employee will operate light duty vehicle up to 2 1/2 ton truck, tractors, riding, push or pull mowers, weedeater, chain saws, rakes, shovels, etc.
Employee may also operate the levers of a garbage truck.
Work is generally performed outdoors and some tasks will be performed regardless of weather conditions.
The employee will be exposed to loud noise, dirt, dust, tobacco smoke, and foul odors.


Cuts grass with hand tools or power equipment.
Removes debris from street rights-of-way and other City property.
Loads and unloads dirt, gravel, trash, garbage, and other debris.
Works as part of construction crew in road repair, gravel spreading, or ditch digging.
Cleans, maintains and services equipment and tools.
Must perform heavy manual labor for extended periods under some unfavorable climatic conditions, frequently lifting objects 25 to 50 lbs.
Performs additional duties or emergency duties after normal work hours when requested by supervisor or designee.

Operate a garbage packer.
May operate a vehicle or moving machinery.


Knowledge of the materials and equipment used in general maintenance and construction work.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Ability to carry out simple oral instructions.
Ability to work with machinery and sharp tools.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees.
Ability to bend, crouch and stoop.
Ability to intermittently sit and stand as a result of continuously getting in and out of vehicles.


Applicants possessing the above qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully.
Must pass drug screen by licensed physician.
Must comply with the City's "Weight Control Policy."
