Text of Document: REFUSE COLLECTION DRIVER
This employee is responsible for driving a specialized heavy truck or other vehicle used in collecting garbage and refuse. The employee is under the immediate supervision of the Superintendent of Streets, Sanitation and Parks. Instructions to the employee are detailed and specific but occasionally the employee must use independent judgement when deciding a specific course of action.
The employee will drive a specialized truck and will operate a hydraulic system designed to empty dumpsters and compact refuse.
The employee will also use a variety of hand tools such as a shovel, scoop, and tools needed for routine vehicle maintenance.
The employee typically works in an outdoor environment, and may be exposed to extreme conditions of weather, machinery with moving parts, fumes and chemicals, and heavy lifting.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
Drives and operates specialized garbage or refuse collection trucks or other vehicles.
Assists in loading truck when required and covers assigned area or route.
Maintains proper schedule in picking up and hauling garbage and trash to disposal area.
ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
Performs routine maintenance on the vehicle.
Notes defects in vehicle operation and reports for repair, checks various items such as tires, batteries, oil and water.
Assumes responsibility for cleanliness of vehicle.
May occasionally perform other duties such as mowing.
Performs related work as required.
May perform all the duties of a refuse collector.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Must have a knowledge of the practices used in the operation of a refuse collection truck and hydraulic equipment.
Knowledge of State and City traffic regulations.
Knowledge of safety precautions and maintenance of trucks.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Knowledge of city ordinances and other regulations regarding solid waste collection and disposal.
Geographic knowledge of the city.
Must have an ability to carry out instructions.
Ability to work with unpleasant waste materials.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.
Ability to follow a specified route when collecting refuse.
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to:
Successful completion of the tenth (10th) grade.
Experience in light equipment or truck operation.
Must possess a valid State of Tennessee chauffeur's license.
