DEFINITION

Under general supervision, reads consumer electric and water meters and records readings on hand held meter reading device. Assists in Customer Service office as needed and does related work as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Walks or drives truck over established route and takes readings of meter dials.
Inspects meters and connections for defects, damage, and unauthorized connections.
Indicates irregularities on forms for necessary action by servicing department.
Verifies readings to locate abnormal consumption and records reasons for fluctuations.
Turns service off for nonpayment of charges in vacant premises, or on for new occupants.
Returns route book to business office for billing purposes.
Responsible for the safe operation, care, and appearance of assigned vehicle and equipment.
Communicates effectively with the public and other City employees.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

Work involves kneeling, stooping, bending, and squatting for extended periods of time while reading both digital and dial meters.
Lifts and carries up to 50 pounds of meter lids and meter reading equipment.
Hear and see clearly when working in and around traffic, using proper safety precautions.
Works outdoors in extreme temperatures, temperature swings and inclement weather.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Ability to carry out oral and written directions;
Ability to read meters correctly
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure.

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of training or experience equivalent to:

High school diploma or GED.
Tennessee driver's license.
3 to 6 months experience.
Applicants must be in such physical condition as not to impair their performance of the required duties of the class and may be required to take a physical examination given by a physician licensed to practice medicine in the State and designated by the City.
