DEFINITION

Employees in this class are under general supervision of the Operating Superintendent. Work in performed supervising and coordinating the activities of employees in the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground electric lines and related work as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Plans and schedules the maintenance and construction of electric lines.
Assigns employees to specific duties.
Determines materials, equipment, and supplies to be used on a project.
Transfers personnel and equipment from one project to another as necessary.
Inspects work in progress and instructs employees.
Supervises workers engaged in erecting poles, stringing wires, hanging transformers, and transformer banks.
Performs work of a skilled, semi-skilled, or unskilled nature when necessary.
Supervises workers engaged in making emergency repairs.
Supervises the routine maintenance of tools and equipment.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

Train new workers.
Maintains time and production records.
Establishes and adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules.
Analyzes and resolves work problems, or assists workers in solving work problems.
Recommends personnel actions and makes policy decisions.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of effective and efficient methods of scheduling maintenance and construction of electric lines.
Knowledge of all legal regulations regarding employee health and safety.
Knowledge of maintenance of equipment and tools.
Knowledge of accepted construction principles.
Knowledge of materials and equipment used in maintenance and construction in electric lines.
Ability to plan, organize, assign, and supervise and inspect the work of subordinates
Ability to use the necessary tools in the performance of required skills.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to keep routine records and make simple reports.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor under unfavorable climatic conditions.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to:

Graduation from a standard high school.
Ten years working experience the electric utilities industry;
Six years experience as a line man at the journeyman level and two years experience as a lead line worker.
Tennessee Commercial Drivers License;
Applicants must be in such physical condition as not to impair their performance of the required duties of the class and may be required to take a physical examination given by a physician licensed to practice medicine in the State and designated by the City.
