The 2006 International Building Code, Section 106.5 states that one set of approved construction documents shall be retained by the building official for a period of not less than 180 days from the date of completion of the permitted work.
Former MTAS Legal Consultant Dennis Huffer in his Records Management publication, part of which is attached, states that building plans for municipal buildings, including schools, should be retained for the life of the building (plus additional time if litigation could arise from a building’s early demise).
I recommend that you do a records management plan using Huffer’s Records Management Publication.
