DEFINITION:
The employee is responsible for coordinating the various recreational programs with the public and volunteer members of activity boards.
Duties also include executing and implementing programs, typing and clerical duties under close supervision of the Recreation Director. Duties may also include supervising employees in a lower classification.
Instructions to the employee are general in nature. Independent judgement is sometimes used according to the situation to complete the task.

EQUIPMENT JOB LOCATION:

The employee will operate a computer, typewriter, fax machine, copier, and other modern office equipment. A light duty vehicle may be used at times.
The employee works mainly indoors at the Recreation Center; however, some functions are conducted at the City's facilities throughout the City.
Some activities require work in inclement weather.
The employee is exposed to tobacco smoke and loud noise at times.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

Prepare, develop and implement a variety of recreation programs suitable for all segments of the population, including special populations.
Maintain accurate sign-up procedures and attendance lists.
Evaluate each program's effectiveness.
Communicate with other agencies, organizations and individuals to promote recreation services and to request or secure program assistance through volunteerism or funding.
Prepare news releases for all local media.
Compose and type letters and correspondence.
Receives cash funds from recreational activities and the employee accounts for all money received.
Communicates with the public and employees of other departments on matters requiring the interpretation of Department policies and regulations.
Prepare detailed, complex clerical reports.

Maintains routine accounting, financial and cost records, where some knowledge is required.
Set up and type from copy, rough drafts, or general instructions: letters, tables, reports, forms, memoranda, payrolls, vouchers, stencils, mats, and detailed instructions, or other material requiring independent judgement on problems encountered.
Prepares various documents from files.
May supervise employees of lower classification.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of business English and arithmetic.
Knowledge of principles of recreation program implementation.
Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and functions.
Knowledge of community recreation needs and concerns.
Knowledge of recreation trends and their effect on local citizens.
Knowledge of departmental rules, regulations, procedures and functions.
Ability to make arithmetic computations and tabulations accurately and with reasonable speed.
Ability to evaluate situations and make decisions.
Ability to work independently on a variety of difficult and responsible program and clerical tasks.
Ability to express ideas clearly, concisely and convincingly.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to supervise other employees.
Ability to type accurately at an acceptable rate of speed.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from a standard high school or equivalent.
Considerable experience in recreation programming.
Must pass a drug screen by licensed physician.
Must comply with the City's "Weight Control Policy."
